しょうぶん【性分】

〔性質〕 nature; 〔気質〕 temperament. [⇒しょう⁷ 1]

●持って生まれた性分 one's nature; 《文》 one's natural disposition

・彼の怠惰は持って生まれた性分だ. He was born idle. | He is lazy by nature.

・彼は気の弱い性分だ. He's weak-willed [timid] by nature.

・彼は損な性分だ. He's his own worst enemy.

●性分に合わない do not suit one; go against the grain 《with one》; 《口》 be not one's cup of tea; be not in one's line

・性分に合った[合わない]仕事 a job that suits [doesn't suit] one; a job one is temperamentally suited [unsuited] for; 《文》 congenial [uncongenial] work.

●私の性分としてそんなことはできません. It would go against the grain for me to do that. | That's not something I am temperamentally capable of.

・ぼくの性分だから仕方がない. It's just [I can't help it; it's] the way I'm made. | I'm this way by nature, so it can't be helped.
